UP HC approved anti-Romeo squads
The Uttar Pradesh High Court today officially approved anti-Romeo squads on the streets of the state while replying to a PIL on the same. Anti-Romeo squads were set up by Yogi Adityanath’s Government to tackle eve teasing.
The Allahabad High Court approved the anti-Romeo squad concept and also said that the Government must ensure certain guidelines must be followed by these squads. The court said these squads should not take law into their own hands and must not disturb consenting couples.
A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) was filed by a lawyer against Yogi Adityanath’s anti-Romeo squads as it “restricted freedom”. The Lucknow bench of Justice Amreshwar Pratap and Justice Sanjay Harkauli gave the order allowing these anti-Romeo squads. The petitioner also sought that certain guidelines be establish for these squads.
Chief Standing Counsel of Uttar Pradesh, Mr Mansoor Ahmad represented the Government. Ahmad said that the Director General of Police (DGP) had already issued proper guidelines for the same on March 22 and March 25.
The court disposed of the petition while asking the Uttar Pradesh Government to ensure there is a significant increase in the public to people ratio.
The “Romeo” issue
One of the first decisions of Yogi Adityanath was to set up an anti-Romeo squad. The media immediately took this opportunity to say Yogi was implementing a “Hindutva agenda”. The media highlighted how the real purpose of these squads was to carry out a campaign against love jihad. Here;s what they are missing out though. Several international media houses have highlighted one rape is reported every 15 minutes in India. I remember quite well how certain channels highlighted this point and questioned Modi on what action he had taken. The irony however that is when someone is taking a huge step to stop this, the media is lashing out at him. (Source)
